This adventure is more designed for the casual biker and often paired with bike rentals. The trail is very scenic, especially north of Blackwell in the canyon. The new surface on parts of the trail make the riding slower and more effort, even with a road bike's thinner tires, which to answer a rider's question, yes road bikes work well on this trail. Even more impressive than the waterfalls of Pine Island Run is the waterfall on Water Tank Run, which sits two miles further south. And I would do it again! There is a slight 2% downhill grade from Ansonia to Rattlesnake Rock which made the trip a little easier for us. The Cedar Run Inn is a nice B&B, clean and comfortable. The surface was much more packed down and easier to ride. Because of the wilderness, they just want to make sure they can find you in case something happens. It is a jewel well known as a base for visiting fisherman and hunters. The following day we parked at the Ansonia lot and had Pine Creek Outfitters pick up our vehicle and drop it off at our destination in Waterville. The only downside of the ride was the cold and wind. The Golden Eagle Trail begins at the Clark Farm/Utceter Station Recreational Parking Area approximately 2.7 miles north of the village of Cammal, along PA Route 414 in the Pine Creek Valley, Lycoming County. There are more access areas and comfort stations along the southern route but not a lot of opportunities to purchase food or water. Never too windy and mostly shaded all the way. Bunch of other people had scene some too that day. This was once the site of a fire tower and the remains of the anchors can be seen. We would hike around the Grand Canyon on our off riding days, with one day taking a day trip to the wine region of New York. It's also easy to access, with canoe and boat launches right . The Park Service does ask you to get a camping permit, but it is free. The trail extends 62 miles south from Wellsboro Junction to Jersey Shore in the adjoining Tiadaghton State Forest. From the Ansonia access area to Tiadaghton, horse riders can use the dirt road that travels along side of the rail trail. Although the Pine Creek Rail Trail as we know it, was constructed between 1995 and 2007, it has been a pathway for many for centuries. The trail is immaculate, probably the smoothest rail-to-trail I've been on. . The one exception is an ice cream shop about half way but I didn't stop so I don't know the days or hours of operation. The surface, hard packed crushed gravel made for easy peddling. There are motels on Rt 6 just west of there. About 4 miles from there is Little Pine State Park which has a nice campground and lake. It's a beautiful ride through one of the most scenic areas in the Northeast. From the trail head at the north, it's about a 4 1/2 mile bike ride along the road into Wellsboro and construction has begun to extend the trail into town - I'm not sure when completion is expected. The rural scenery is gorgeous and the trail is well-maintained with very little change in grade. Pennsylvania does a great job with all their trails. There are no intersecting roads from Darling Run to Blackwell. The trail is beautiful and has terrific views of the stream and mountains. A great trail, definitely hall of fame. This trail is 2 miles straight down to the creek, and then you can cross the creek like I did if it is shallow enough at the time and then 2 miles back up the other side of the canyon! I can only imagine what a great place this would be to stay on the Pine Creek Rail Trail. If we can do this trail with a toddler, nearly anyone in reasonable shape can complete this amazing journey. However, if you have time, its much easier to drive to this handicapped-accessible overlook. The trail runs across Pine Creek in the Pine Creek Gorge with endpoints at the Wellsboro Junction and the town of Jersey Shore. You're awesome for doing it! Its a good trail for families, but remember that bicyclists age 12 and under must wear a helmet. This section is mostly shaded with numerous restrooms along the way and another spot for food and water. Comfort stations well spaced and for the most part clean. We didn't see any wildlife today really, but there were so many people, out, that was not too surprising. We just took our 11yo and 8yo from Jersey Shore to Waterville (22mi) and it was fantastic.
